How to Add Your Recorder to Your Smartphone
Hi everyone, today we have a tutorial article, and accompanying video for you regarding how to add your recorder to your Smartphone. Recently, we just released a set of articles that were similar, and also about this topic, but focused specifically on the setup for remote viewing as a whole. Remote viewing is, of course, the process of activating the internet connectivity on the recorder, and then adding the network information for that same recorder to a computer or smartphone for the purpose of being able to look at the camera systems live feed, anytime, anywhere in the world. Recently our smartphone remote viewing application- Elite Viewer Pro (EVP) – was updated, and we wanted to put together a quick guide for how to add a recorder already set up for remote viewing to the app. This is because the newest version of EVP has some significant visual changes to the user interface which we felt warranted a small secondary guide on simply adding this info to the newest version of the app. At the end of this process, you should know how to add your recorder to your Smartphone. However, before we begin explaining this process, let’s talk a bit about remote viewing, and what information you will need.
When asking How to add your recorder to your Smartphone, you should first know that there are two ways to go about setting up remote viewing on your recorder so that it can be accessed later by your devices like your computer or as in this case your smartphone. You will find some short information on these methods below, and accompanying video guides as well as links to larger articles about those topics.
How to add your recorder to your Smartphone Method 1: P2P
The first method and our most recommended method is called P2P or NAT. P2P is generally our recommended method of setting up remote viewing because it is by far the simplest with very little previous knowledge of networking or computers required in order to set up. For this method you simply need to make sure a few important things:
- The Recorders setup wizard is completed, and you have set up a username, password, and email in the recorder. You will need to write down your password, as the app will need this to connect. The App can not and does not use the dot pattern method for login.
- The recorder is plugged by ethernet cable into an internet providing network devices such as a router, or modem.
- The recorder is set to DHCP under the TCP/IP submenu under Networking settings. This is so that it can get a proper IP address from the network. Alternatively, you can also give the recorder a static IP address so long as it is in a scheme with the network it is physically connected to, the IP is available on that network, and the default gateway and DNS information is entered accurately.
How to add your recorder to your Smartphone Method 2: Port Forwarding.
Port Forwarding is substantially more complex than p2p, and for this reason, it is our less recommended method of setup. However, there are some circumstances such as complex business networks, firewall systems, or picky routers that won’t behave well with nat or p2p. In these circumstances, you may have to use port forwarding to properly connect the recorder to the internet. Port forwarding is the process of telling your router to very specifically allow traffic in and/or out of one particular location on your network. This is done by assigning a “port” number or numbers to a device on the network. After this, the router’s settings page must be accessed in order to manually input the port and IP address data from the device – in this case, your recorder – into the router’s port forwarding table. With this information, the router knows that any time a device outside your network asks for the ports you opened, to send that request to your recorder, and vice versa. There are a few important things you will need to know/have in order to be successful with port forwarding:
- The Recorders setup wizard is completed, and you have set up a username, password, and email in the recorder. You will need to write down your password, as the app will need this to connect. The App can not and does not use the dot pattern method for login.
- The recorder is plugged by ethernet cable into an internet providing network devices such as a router, or modem.
- The recorder must be set to a static IP address that it is in a scheme with the network it is physically connected to, the IP must be available on that network, and the default gateway and DNS information has to be entered accurately.
- You will need to know your router’s default gateway- the IP address that links to its settings page.
- You will need your router’s login information for its settings page. This is often confused with the wifi SSID and Password. These are not at all the same thing. You can usually obtain this info on the side of your ISPs router. If you cannot locate it, contact your ISP.
