I'm sure this has come up before so could someone guide me to the solution for playing backup files? I have backed up to a USB hard disc and a thumb drive. When I try to play the thumb drive windows 8 tells me the Window Media Player does not have the proper "codecs". When I google for the codecs I get a lot of responses which I am afraid I am not knowledgeable enough to sort through. What do I need to do, and how do I do it, to play back these DVR backup files? First on my computer, and then on any windows computer?
Craig,
You can use the software that is included in this link: https://app.box.com/s/0krk5f6u.....gh98649f52
Thanks

Have you tried saving the file as avi? Then see if WMP can play that file.

Shockwave 199: I have tried changing the file extension to a few different types, including .avi after you suggested it, to no avail.
Jesus Ragusa: I have downloaded Smart Player 3.0 but do not know how to install it. The included Users Guide lists installation instructions in section 2.1 but then that section is not included! It skips from section 1 to 3 (page 1 to page 7). I do not see any .exe files. What's the story?

OK, I went to your direct link which comes from SecCamKing according to the Windows Run/Save option box but before downloading it I went back to the download from Jesus' link since it was already on the computer. I was sure I had more than the Guide (a couple dozen files/folders.) I again clicked on Smart Player (listed as "application" without an exe extension) and Windows again refused to open it. This time I opened it anyway and Smart Player popped right up.
Now for making the files readable on computers without the Smart Player on them: I see an "export" button which offers to use file types such as .jpg (good) but do not see how to export or convert files I have added, it just shows current date with adjustable times to export. I would like to put backup files I have added to the player on thumb drives so that I may show them at other locations.
Thanks for the help.

As I explained in my 9:50 AM post today, I have done that, and though Windows warnings were enough to stop me the first couple times I went ahead and opened it anyway earlier today. Thanks.
Now I am working on putting the files I have linked to the open Smart Player in a format most computers can open such as .jpg or .avi. The export button provides a screen with these options. I'll give it a trial run to see if I can get them to a thumb drive in those file extensions when I have a bit more time. Again, thanks all.
