I have the Federal Hybrid FE016-DH-160 DVR/NVR that is a little over a year old.  I am needing to back up over 400 GB externally.  Rather than burn up dozens of DVD disks or buy a bunch of flash drives, I bought a 1 TB Western Digital My Passport Ultra External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive.  The DVR will not recognize the device and the USB auto detect does not pop up.  When I go to the import/export menu, it seems to know there is some kind of USB drive present but says it is "abnormal" and to refresh again.  It will not show up in the device drop-down menu on the Backup screen.  The USB ports do recognize a 32 gb flash drive.  This WD drive is listed as being USB 2.0 backward compatible.  I have tried it in all of the USB ports on the DVR except the one my mouse is plugged into.  I have verified it works on a nearby 3 ghz pentium tower computer.  How do I get it to work with this DVR?  Is there a firmware update available that will get the DVR to recognize it?

Okay, one small change to my previous comments.  The flash drive it recognized is 16 gb, not 32 gb.

The DVR will not recognize that drive, it is simply to big. To this day the product line has a 64GB max on the USB.

I wish that had been indicated somewhere in the manual.  It says you can use external usb drives for backup but doesn't state a limit.  I have been able to get it to recognize a 128 gb flash drive, so what I am having to do is backup around 100-110 gb at a time to the flash drive and then copy it over to the WD drive using a desktop computer.

You can back up the data using IE browser. If you need to push more data you can set up an FTP server and push the data to that server.

Here is an article on the subject
